The Lanesville Lady Eagles eked out a big 3-2 victory over the North Harrison Lady Cats at Lanesville Monday afternoon (May 4) in varsity softball action.
In the most recent coaches’ poll, Lanesville was ranked no. 12 in Class 1A, and in Class 3A, North Harrison was ranked no. 15.
Lanesville started off scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning, when Ashley Schoen hit a round trip solo shot over the left center field fence.
North Harrison took a brief 2-1 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, when Sasha Grangier and Alyssa McAfee both singled safely for the Lady Cats. A bit later, Kristin Hoehn scored a North Harrison runner with a successful bunt. Then Lady Cats’ pitcher Courtney Crone scored another runner with a ground out.
The Lady Eagles didn’t sit still in the bottom of the 2nd frame.
Drawing a walk for the Lady Eagles was Elizabeth Sacasas, and Kari McCormick managed to single in a close play at first base.
An error gave Sacasas a chance to score and tie the game up at 2-2, and Erin Dorgay later scored the winning run on a routine ground out.
Neither team managed to score the remaining five innings of play.
A happy Lanesville coach Bill Krammes thought that both teams played well.
“I thought we were lucky enough to have more runs when it was over,” Krammes said. It was a really good game.”
Krammes also thought North Harrison showed grit and determination in the way they played.
“I thought their kids really fought,” he said.
Starting Lanesville pitcher Ashley Schoen picked up the win, and scattered seven strike outs among the North Harrison batters.
North Harrison pitcher Courtney Crone had six strike outs in the game, and was tagged with the loss.
The Lady Eagles had five hits and a single mistake, and North Harrison had four hits and a pair of errors.
Although Krammes said that the team’s hitting needs to improve, he was happy with where they sttod altogether.
“The girls have done really well; I’m proud of them,” he said.
