Local resident, Lavina, of Pekin gets a surprise dream granted by the Granting Dreams Foundation. It started as a request submitted from a friend, Kim, who lives in Nashville, Tennessee and had heard about Granting Dreams. Several weeks later, Kim learned that her friend Lavina, age 56, who has cancer, would be going to Nashville to realize a long held dream of meeting Martina McBride.
Relatives of Lavina, Mr. and Mrs. Schroder, would be the ones to drive her to Nashville and had told Lavina that they were going to take a short overnight trip to get her out of the house. They all arrived in Nashville on Friday and were guests of the luxurious Hyatt Place Hotel. That evening they were treated to a wonderful dinner at the Caney Fork Fish Camp restaurant where they were serenaded by the restaurant's band. Lavina thought this was all wonderful, but it was only then that Lavina was let in on the real surprise that would take place on Saturday. She was informed that they would be going to the Grand Ole Opry where she would be given a back-stage tour and tickets to the concert staring Martina McBride. After her performance, they would be escorted back stage where Lavina would be able to meet and talk to Martina. She stated that she was so happy and excited that she could not hold back the tears of joy. When backstage, Lavina said to Martina: “The family enjoys putting on your music and my granddaughter, LaKota and I sing along on a microphone while my husband, Jimmy, plays the drums and my son-in-law, Dennis, plays the guitar.” Martina posed for some photos and autographs and Lavina stated that she was so personable and down to earth - just a real nice person.
Lavina, family and friends are all thankful to the Granting Dreams Founation for helping bring Lavina's dream to reality and for helping those in this age group that have no where else to turn.
