He loved his family and being part of a small town, and Raymond “Kenny” Fabel was a pretty shrewd businessman.

Kenny Fabel died at age 79 on Saturday, May 5, at his home. He and his beloved wife Elizabeth, “Libby,” had recently sold the office mall they had built in 1976 in Scottsburg to house the family business, the old Scott County Office Equipment, and other enterprises and had at last totally retired.

Kenny had worked most of his life. He was the son of two other hard workers, the late Clyde Fabel and Lula Brown Fabel. He graduated from Henryville High School in 1957 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1958 to 1962.

Returning home, he became a service technician for office machines. From that capacious knowledge came Kenny’s idea to operate his own business. He started the firm in 1969 serving local businesses, finally selling it in 1981. Of course, Libby was at his side, helping there as well as running their home in Henryville and keeping track of their two sons and daughter. Their brood gave them four grandsons and two great-grandsons. Their lives were rarely quiet, but that was more than fine with them. The couple laughed, cried and loved through 59 years of marriage.

A celebration of Kenny’s life is planned on Saturday, May 26, at Moose Lodge 1757, located at 1040 South Indiana Avenue in Sellersburg, from 1 to 3 p.m. The family invites all friends to attend. At 3 p.m., a memorial service will be conducted. Members of the Sellersburg American Legion Post will perform military rites during the service. At its conclusion, a reception offering food and fellowship is planned.

Memorial contributions may be arranged through the staff of the Adams Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Henryville to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
