?The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Scott County held its annual event at William Graham Lake Iola
park on June 13 and 14.
To date, Relay For Life of Scott County has raised over $43,000, after expenses, with more to come before the
fiscal year ends August 31.
Although an early afternoon downpour and threats of more rain that Friday night dampened the festivities a little,
persistent teams continued to set up campsites and started relaying. The evening started with an honorary dinner that
celebrated 210 cancer survivors and caregivers.
Following the dinner was the traditional and very touching honor lap at 6 p.m. Even though it continued to rain,
Leadership Development Chairman Beth Niccum stated, “Cancer doesn’t take a break when it rains, and the foul
weather only made this event more meaningful, because we will continue to fight.”
Twenty-five teams with 345 team members participated. The team of Bosom Beauty Richard Colonition
(Versatech) won the Best Campsite Award for their creative MargaRelayville theme. Missy’s Memory team won the
Most Spirited Award by participating in themed laps throughout the entire night. The Morgan Foods Inc. team
offered the “best food” and the U.S. Army Reserves received the Perseverance Award for not walking but running
laps throughout the entire night.
Teams participate in Relay For Life fund-raisers throughout the entire year, culminating with the Relay For Life,
which is always held the second weekend of June each year.
