New Washington restaurant wins national award PDF Print E-mail

It is always nice to be recognized for your hard work and dedication to a job. It seems to be a little sweeter when the recognition is not just local but national attention.


A New Washington restaurant has received a national Toasty Award for their staff. Locals are not surprised by the award, The GOAT Award. The GOAT Award, The Greatest of All Time Staff, was recently awarded to the staff at The 1894 Lodge.

The award was presented by Toast, their point of sale system. The staff vied for the award coast-to-coast from 3,000 restaurants. The first round went from 3,000 restaurants down to 300 and then the final round went to just 30.

“The voting process knocked it down from 3,000 to 300 then to 30. When we got to the 30 it was then divided into the categories. We won The GOAT award for the staff, The Greatest of All Time Staff. The other categories were Most Technological and Most Selfiable Decor,” explained Logan Hostetler, General Manager of The 1894 Lodge.

The award gives The Lodge more than just bragging rights. There was a $1,500 donation to No Child Hungry in The 1894 Lodge’s name; $1,500 in local and regional publicity and $1,500 of free support gear.

“We were able to get four tablets. We are now going to begin using hand held tablets. We have four I am getting ready today (October 19) for this weekend,” Hostetler added. “They (Toast) did a lot of stuff for us.”

The staff of 16 has been able to enjoy the award with the community. A free ice cream party was held last month as part of the celebration.

“Jeni’s Ice Cream shipped us ice cream for like 30 people. We had an ice cream party. It was good. We have had a great time,” Hostetler said.

The GOAT Staff of The 1894 Lodge include: Lincoln Hostetler, Tracy Perkins, Brian Eganey, Devin Wilson, Damion Beeler, Denise Leezer, Jolene King, Steve Schnauer, Amber Atkins, Cassondra Brooks, Kaelin Hentrup, Destiny Hartley, Courtney Brooks, Jessica James, Alexa Franklin and Logan Hostetler.

The 1894 Lodge is located at 409 E. Main Street in New Washington. Hours are Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and 5 to 9 p.m. for dinner and Saturday hours are 5 to 10 p.m. You can also find them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram- The 1894 Lodge.

“We have everything local. We have locally sourced meat, we grow our own produce when able and use local farmers. We have an unbelievable eclectic building and we have became a community gathering place where literally everyone knows your name. If you are new, we will welcome you with open arms. The atmosphere is like home. We love to see people coming in and having fun,” Hostetler stated when asked what he would tell someone that has never visited the restaurant to get them to The Lodge.

Hostetler continued about his favorite part of the job, “Honestly to me it’s the interaction between staff and customers. Everything goes very well and when customers leave with a smile on their face. Everybody takes ownership of it. They take pride in what they are doing. We really do have a great staff.”

Hostetler recently hired a new Executive Chef, Brian Eganey. He is working to develop “comfort food with a modern twist” using the locally grown ingredients.

When asked what his favorite dish was, Hostetler immediately responded, “I really like our steaks. Our specials are always amazing. Brian is working now to create comfort food with a modern twist. Our daily specials run until we run out. Then we do try to make something new.”

The 1894 Lodge is also preparing to host a Chili Cookoff on November 4. There will be a $35 entry fee. According to Hostetler, there will be no rules, just bring your best pot of chili. The cookoff begins at 3 p.m.

“We are working now to get celebrity chefs as the judges for the chili cookoff. We are also going to have the Bourbon Cowboys, John Michael King and Brady Meenach, in concert that day beginning around 8,” Hostetler added.

The day of fun will also feature corn hole and the fire pits will be going.

The chili cook off winner will receive $50 and a t-shirt.
