One shot following road rage incident PDF Print E-mail

Saturday evening at 8:37 pm, Washington County 911 received a call of a shooting at the intersection of Delaney Park Road and East Nicholson Hollow Road near Salem.


When Washington County deputies arrived, they located a male subject identified as Devin Roll, 24, of Salem, lying in a ditch next to the roadway with a gunshot wound to his  leg. Also at the scene was Robert Abner, 52, from Vallonia and his wife Anita Abner of Vallonia.

Washington County deputies contacted the Indiana State Police to assist them in the investigation.

An Indiana State Police Crime Scene Investigator and detective arrived at the scene. After speaking with all the individuals at the scene, including witnesses. The preliminary investigation shows that Robert Abner and Devin Roll became engaged in a road rage incident which began on State Road 135 near Salem.

The incident came to a head at the intersection of Delaney Park Road and East Nicholson Hollow Road near Salem, after the two men exited their vehicles and began a fist fight. During the fight at some point, Anita Abner, the wife of Robert Abner, got involved in the scuffle and was injured. Also during the fight, Robert Abner retrieved a handgun and shot Devin Roll in the leg.

Devin Roll and Anita Abner were both flown by air ambulance to the University of Louisville Hospital in Louisville, KY with non-life threatening injuries.

Abner was transported to the St Vincent’s Hospital in Salem with non-life threatening injuries. After his release from the hospital he was arrested and incarcerated at the Washington County Jail for Criminal Recklessness with a Firearm and Aggravated Battery.

This investigation is continuing.
