Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall took time out Thursday, February 12, to visit Charlestown Middle and High School students with an Apple laptop demo the day after the Greater Clark County School Board approved the necessary funding for the One-to-One Computing Initiative.
One-to-One is a collaboration program between the City of Charlestown and the Greater Clark County School system to support student learning in a technology-enriched environment with a firm commitment to laying the foundation of 21st Century skills. The One-to-One Computing Initiative as a catalyst for creating a student curriculum that focuses around preparing our kids for careers in the high-demand, technology-driven fields of tomorrow. Part of the initiative is putting a laptop in the hands of every Charlestown student, grades six through twelve, starting next school year (2009-2010).
Mayor Hall made the following comments Thursday when helping to announce the good news of successful funding measures enacted by the School Board.
“The One-to-One (1:1) Initiative is a giant step into the future for our youth and our community. It sounds like kids getting a computer but it is so much more. For Charlestown to be the first public school in the state of Indiana to have this will bring a new excitement to our community. Over the next 24 months there will be several more components announced by the City to support our partnership with the schools that will make us a model that other communities will come to see,” Hall stated.
He continued, “These laptops level the playing ground for every student because they will have access to the opportunities and information through the web. I am so excited to know that come this next school year there will be many more positive things that our youth will have to participate in.”
Hall concluded, “I want to thank those school board members who stood up for the kids in Charlestown, to give them a shot at preparing for the best jobs that our country has to offer. Special thanks to School Board President Bob McEwen and Superintendent Travis Haire for helping lead the way on this vital piece of bringing a brighter future to our youth and for everyone in the City of Charlestown.”
More information for Charlestown Middle and High School students and parents is forthcoming.
