The Charlestown Common Council meeting on December 1, revealed more details of an apartment complex that is in preliminary planning stages for Charlestown Landing, on the south end of the city.
The 224 apartment units will be built in stages. The four buildings in Phase 1, containing 64 units, are expected to be completed in the Spring of 2009. The construction of a club house will follow, and then subsequent phases will be built as the original units are filled.
Before construction can begin, various actions and approvals are required from the Charlestown Common Council as well the Advisory Plan Commission (planning and zoning board).
At the recommendation of the Advisory Plan Commission, the requested zoning variance was approved by the council.
Charlestown Mayor Bob Hall indicated the apartment development is very timely in the current housing situation, as mortgages have become more difficult to obtain. The jobs this creates will help, also. The council is unanimously supporting the development. In other business:
*The 2009 Budget for Capital Improvements was approved.
*City Attorney Mike Gillenwater provided an update on the land-swap between the city and Greater Clark County Schools (GCCS).
The Charlestown Common Council meets the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
