A dozen jurors and one alternate were selected and seated and opening statements by the defense and prosecuting attorneys were made in the James L. Knight criminal trial in Scott Circuit Court on Monday, March 9.

Knight, 43, is the former Lexington area resident who allegedly attacked his estranged wife three years ago. He is charged with rape, burglary resulting in bodily injury, criminal confinement, armed robbery, intimidation, conversion, pointing a firearm at another person and domestic battery. Knight was released from jail after posting an $8,000 cash bond in April, 2012. He now resides in Washington County with a relative. The couple’s divorce was finalized in January, 2013, according to court records. If he is found guilty on the most serious of the charges, Knight could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison.

The trial is expected to take up much of the court’s time this week.
