This past May, the Austin Alumni Association established the Austin High School Alumni Scholarship Fund through the Community Foundation.
The effort developed through the tremendous success of the Alumni Association over the past few years and the fact that the Scott County School District has committed to match dollar-for-dollar all funds raised up to $25,000.
In cooperation with the school system, the Alumni association has extended the deadline for having contributions apply to the dollar-for- dollar match until December 31. Currently a total of $13,800 has been raised. The push to get to the $25,000 mark has already begun.
Contributors should keep in mind donations are fully tax deductible. This, coupled with the matching funds, allows donors to have their contribution represent 2½ times their value to the fund.
The Scholarship Fund is a permanent fund, meaning the actual value of the fund can never be withdrawn. Returns on the invested amount will be the only money made available each year for scholarships.
Contributing to the Scholarship Fund is a chance for each donor to be part of a legacy that will live forever and continue to provide much-needed assistance for young people who wish to further their educations.
Many alumni have made contributions to the Scholarship Fund a class effort, seeing how much they can collect as team effort. Two groups which have been particularly successful are the Classes of 1952 and 1961. Each are nearing the $1,000 mark. It is an excellent was of giving back to the community that has given so much.
Potential donors with questions are welcome to contact the Community Foundation or any of the current officers of the Austin Alumni Association. Officers include Patrick Kilburn, president; Roy Lynn Schneck, vice president; Karen Payne, treasurer; and Ishmael White, secretary.
