The Austin Lady Eagles took on the Lady Mustangs of New Washington on November 18 in their first home game of the new basketball season.

From start to finish, the Lady Eagles outhustled New Washington, outscoring their opponents in every quarter to end the game on top 67-24.

Both teams got off to slow starts until sophomore Akaya Walker kicked things into gear with a two-pointer, the first in a long line that she would score that evening. Her efforts gave the Eagles thew jump start they needed, and a trey from the hands of Kaitlin Embrey set the score at 7-0.

This caused the Lady Mustangs to call a time-out, their second in just two minutes of play. The defensive efforts of Austin proved to be too much for the Mustangs, who didn’t score their first points of the game until two minutes remained in the first quarter.

The one-two punch of Embrey and Kami Owens, another talented sophomore, pushed the score even further lop-sided, 26-5. The Lady Mustangs couldn’t put together a run, remaining scoreless for nearly five minutes. Addie Brasher, a freshman with promise, also contributed valuable minutes for the Eagles squad, being fearless in the lane and drawing fouls when necessary which placed her at the charity stripe.

Walker continued to be unstoppable from all spots on the floor and ended the half with a deuce at the baseline that put the score at 41-12.

The Austin ladies kept up this pace in the remaining 16 minutes of the gamer and came out with a 67-24 win to improve their record to 2-0.

Leading the night’s scoring for the Lady Eagles was Walker with 19. Embrey contributed 16, Brasher 14, Owens 5 and Hailey Misamore 5. MacKenzie Norton and Skyler Coomer each brought home 4 points.
