A Scottsburg woman was fatally injured when her car was struck as it was crossing State Road 56 at Boatman Road on Wednesday afternoon, August 13.

Linda S. Veiland, 62, was rushed by ambulance to Scott Memorial Hospital, where she died. Veiland had reportedly been on her way to pick up her husband at his workplace, Total Concepts of Design, when the mishap occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m.

The intersection where the accident occurred is fairly notorious locally since it has been the site of many wrecks in the past. It is marked by a flashing yellow signal urging caution to drivers on S.R. 56, with stop signs and a red flashing signal warning drivers on Boatman Road.

According to the driver of the second vehicle involved, Jeremy B. Morrow, 32, Brownstown, he had been traveling west from Scottsburg prior to the accident. Morrow told Deputy Joe Guarneri that he saw an eastbound vehicle slow down and turn south onto Boatman Rd. as he approached the intersection.

Morrow then said Veiland’s car, a 2004 Dodge Intrepid, started to slowly roll southbound into the intersection from the north side, actions which, he said, caused him to slow down.

As soon as the first vehicle turned south, Morrow said the Dodge proceeded across the intersection. Morrow’s 1998 Ford Taurus  struck the driver’s side of the Intrepid. Morrow related that he had tried to brake and had swerved to the left to avoid the collision.

A witness who lives near the intersection corroborated Morrow’s story, saying the southbound Intrepid pulled out in front of the westbound Taurus.

Veiland was severely injured and trapped inside her car. Scottsburg volunteer firemen assisted at the scene as did Deputy Jeremy Arnold, Sgt. Brian Hall of the Scottsburg Police Department, Scott County EMS technicians and Julian’s Wrecker Service.

Despite their efforts, the woman died shortly after arrival at the local hospital. She was pronounced dead there by Scott County Coroner Jerry Buchanan.

Veiland was the daughter of the late Virgil and Esther Lind. She was born in Scottsburg on August 21, 1951.

She was a certified nursing assistant.

Cremation was selected. Visitation with the family was conducted Tuesday morning, August 19, at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin.
