Charges have been filed against Jonathan Lee “Chisel” Chilton, 29, for his alleged actions when the man, wanted on warrant for a shooting incident in Jackson County, was found and arrested in a Scottsburg restaurant parking lot.

Chilton was arrested by officers with the Versailles post of Indiana State Police (ISP) late Sunday night, July 14, as he sat in a vehicle in the empty parking lot of Cracker Barrel, a popular Scottsburg restaurant. Officers had been searching for him since charges were filed in Jackson County against him in connection with a May 27 shooting north of Crothersville on U.S. Highway 31. Chilton is accused of having shot several times at a car reportedly fleeing from him. Occupants of the car are alleged to have been involved in a disputed drug deal in Crothersville, and Chilton had purportedly been called by a friend to help. (See related story.)

He disappeared after the shooting, for which he was charged with battery committed by means of a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and carrying a handgun without a license and with a prior offense. That Jackson County warrant was issued June 5. At the time of his capture, Chilton apparently refused to surrender or get out of the vehicle. State police reported finding a number of pills and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. In Scott Superior Court on July 15, Chilton has pleaded innocent to possession of a precursor or legend drug, a Level 6 felony under Indiana’s new criminal classification, and other Class A misdemeanor charges of possession of a Schedule 1-4 controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia,  resisting law enforcmeent and operating a motor vehicle while license is suspended. His jury trial is now scheduled October 14, and a public defender has been assigned to the case. His bond is set at $45,000 corporate surety bond or $4,500 cash bail. In Jackson County, Chilton will attend an initial hearing in Circuit Court concerning his outstanding charges there on August 29 at 1 p.m.

Chilton is still incarcerated at the Scott County facility.
