Steve “Spoonman” Tankersley is confident that Pekin once again holds the World’s Record for largest spoon ensemble.

Tankersley said 2,439 people took wristbands and registered for the record-breaking attempt last Thursday night in Pekin Park.

He said some of those folks didn’t stick around or didn’t participate and won’t be counted, but he is confident Pekin got the 2,000 needed to break the record held by Japan.

“I have to get everything together for the Guiness people, but unless I mess something up, I am confident to say we are the new world record holders,” he said.

Tankersley said it could take a couple of weeks to finalize paper work, collect photos and videos and get everything that’s needed wsubmitted to the proper folks.

He said once Guiness makes it official, which could take six to eight weeks, he will spread the word.

Tankersley said aside from the challenge of getting 2,500 people registered, the biggest challenge was getting 5,000 spoons.

He said that couldn’t have been accomplished with out Washington County Sheriff’s Captain Roger Newlon and Pekin Town Marshall, Jeff Thomas.
