Salem Speedway Fueled by the Hoosier Lottery ushered in a new era of racing excitement at the venerable southern Indiana speedplant in 2013 with the unveiling of the much anticipated Roval road course.
The Roval layout utilizes both the infield short-track and a portion of the half-mile high banks. Drivers navigate the road course, which measures nearly a half-mile in distance, from the high banked track to the short-track and back
“It’s a challenging layout with tight turns, both left and right-hand, combined with high speed areas,” said track general manager Richard Deaton.
Two races were contested on the Roval layout in 2013, featuring the Portland Recycling Front Wheel Drive cars. The Salem Roval Grand Prix, a one-hour timed event, was held in June and the Redneck Enduro 100 in early November. Derrick Bradshaw of Shepherdsville, Ky., won both races.
It was the best race that I have ever been in,” said Bradshaw, a two-time Jeffersonville Sportsdrome Speedway track champion, after winning the June race. “The race was everything that I expected and more. When I hit the high banks it was like (awesome).”
A healthy field of 29 cars graced the pits for the inaugural roval race and that number jumped to 40 for the season ending Redneck Enduro 100 in early November.
Bubby Gedling of Clarksville, Ind., finished second in the Salem Roval Grand Prix and Austin Baum of Shepherdsville, Ky. came home third, with Chris Jennings of Richmond, Ind., fourth and John Groulx of Louisville fifth.
Bradshaw made a late race pass to get around Baum and win the Redneck Enduro 100. Baum finished second with Dallas Bowman of Clarksville, Ind., third, Alec Webb of Jeffersonville fourth and Trevor Edwards of Shepherdsville, Ky., fifth.
The 2014 edition of the Salem Roval Grand Prix is set for Sunday afternoon, June 1st. The one-hour road course race will be preceded by a 35-lap feature for the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts Pure Stocks on the quarter-mile oval.
Spectator gates open at 12-noon on June 1st with practice getting underway at noon and the first race at 1:30 p.m. (EDT).
