Louisville TV station WLKY had a report on it's Web site Friday morning that the Washington County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Todd Smith was a suspect in the murder investigation of Kristie Williams.
Washington County Sheriff Claude Combs said his department did not release any information regarding the Williams case.
“We are assisting the Indiana State Police with the investigation, but it's their investigation,” Combs said. “This department has not released any information on a suspect or suspects in the murder investigation.”
Smith was found dead at a home in Washington County Wednesday morning and that death is also being investigated.
An Indiana State Police press release issued Thursday afternoon said An autopsy was performed Thursday on Smith at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville. The autopsy preliminariy determined the cause of death as a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
Indiana State Police Public Information Director Jerry Goodin said the official and final determination of the cause of death to Robert Todd Smith will not be made until the autopsy results are complete which typically takes up to six weeks.
Smith had been in a relationship with Williams, a local woman who was murdered around April 24 of this year. Goodin said he could neither confirm or deny if Smith was a suspect in the investigation of that case.
“I can neither confirm or deny of he was a suspect, a person of interest or a point of contact in associated at all with that investigation,” Goodin said.
Goodin said he is not allowed to confirm or deny because there is a rule within the Indiana State Police that prohibits him from commenting on those type of things in an on-going investigation.
“That murder investigation is a very active and fluid investigation as we speak,” he said.
