Washington County-Wednesday morning, May 14, 2014 shortly after 8:30 am, officers were called to 10382 Bixler Road in Washington County in reference to a deceased male.

When officers arrived they discovered the body of Robert Todd Smith, 42, of Martinsburg in Washington County.

An autopsy was performed this morning on Robert Todd Smith at the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Louisville, KY. The autopsy preliminarily determined the cause of death as a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The official and final determination of the cause of death to Robert Todd Smith will not be made until the autopsy results are complete which typically takes up to six weeks.

This investigation is continuing.

Smith had been in a relationship with Kristie Williams, a local woman who was murdered around April 24 of this year.

Jerry Goodin who handles public information with the Indiana State Police said he could neither confirm or deny if Smith was a suspect in the investigation of that case.

“I can neither confirm or deny of he was a suspect, a person of interest or a point of contact in associated at all with that investigation,” Goodin said,

Goodin said he is not allowed to confirm or deny because there is a rule within the Indiana State Police that prohibits him from commenting on those type of things in an on-going investigation.

“That murder investigation is a very active and fluid investigation as we speak,” he said.
