Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced Indiana’s 4 Star schools for 2012-2013 and East Washington Elementary School earned the distinction.

In order to achieve this designation, a school must be in the top 25th percentile of schools in three ISTEP-based categories.

A total of 311 schools received the award throughout the state.

Superintendent Ritz congratulated these schools today.

“I am honored to name these schools as our Four Star Schools for this year,” she said. “Winning this award required excellent work by teachers, administrators, students and parents throughout the year and on behalf of the entire Indiana Department of Education I send them my sincere congratulations.”

East Washington Elementary Principal Lisa Thomas said it took a team effort to earn the four-star distinction.

“We are very excited to be honored with the distinction of being a four star school,” she said. “Everyone at the school: teachers, instructional assistants, counselors, cafeteria ladies, bus drivers, all support staff  have worked so diligently to provide the best education possible for our students.

“Our parents have ensured that their students come to school prepared to learn. Our community supports and believes in our school. It has taken all of us working together to earn the four star status.”

There was a public celebration at the school on Monday, May 12.

After the celebration there were tours of the school.

East Washington Elementary students are making T-shirts to wear for the celebration.
