|Football is Back at Scottsburg and Will Continue at SMS|
On Tuesday night, April 1, 2014, the Scott County School District 2 Board of School Trustees voted to start a school operated Junior Varsity high school program at Scottsburg High School with the 2014-2015 school year. In addition to the school operated program at SHS, the school will also sponsor an official school-sanctioned football team at Scottsburg Middle School starting in the Fall of 2014 as well.
“We are very excited to offer our students the opportunity to play football for our school and to represent their school and our community. Our community has stepped up and donated approximately $45,000, including a new scoreboard, for the startup funds for our football program” stated Dr. Marc Slaton, Scott County School District 2 Superintendent. “We have worked very closely with our school board, our youth league, and our community to make this a reality for our studentathletes.
We had a very successful pilot program in the Fall of 2013 at Scottsburg Middle School. That success, coupled with some very clear criteria for the future expansion of football has helped to make this a reality for our youth.” Scott County School District 2 officials are busy making preparations for the upcoming seasons.
Slaton added, “Mr. Rabe is currently working on putting together a game schedule for both Scottsburg Middle School and Scottsburg High School and we are starting the search for a junior varsity high school coach and a middle school coach. We are hoping to have these positions filled by May so that our coaches will have all summer to begin to shape and develop their program. We are also really excited about having our spring call out for our football players who are not currently in a spring sport so that our athletes can get a start on conditioning and weightlifting.”
Spring conditioning will begin within a few days. If your student is interested in playing football for Scottsburg High School’s team contact Mr. Al Rabe at (812) 7528927 or Scottsburg Middle School’s team contact Mr. Kevin Smith at (812) 7528926.
