|Kelly Miller Circus rolling into Charlestown May 3|
The Circus is Coming! The Circus is Coming!
The Kelly Miller Circus, based in Hugo, Oklahoma, will be in Charlestown on Saturday, May 3 for two shows at Jonathan Jennings Elementary School Grounds. Show times will be 2 and 5 p.m. The all new 2014 edition of the Kelly Miller Circus is being sponsored by the Charlestown Beautification Committee. The circus brings an amazingly entertaining event of a real big top circus to Charlestown.
As in years past, the circus will roll into town and the public is invited to a free show before the actual circus shows. The community is encouraged to watch the big tent take form around 9 a.m. as the elephants and crew lift the Big Top into the air. After the first of the four massive main poles that support the Big Top are set, the public is then invited to walk into the tent and watch the crew finish their task at hand. If questions come to mind, a circus veteran will be on hand to answer any and all questions about circus life.
The Kelly Miller Brothers Circus began in 1938 when Obert Miller and his two sons, Kelly and Dores, left their Kansas home to begin a circus. The circus has since grown to include 72 people on the road with the circus, 15 personnel in the home office and marketing department and a total of 24 animals.
The show will arrive in Charlestown with six show owned semi trucks, nine other show owned trucks and vehicles and 18 staff and performers’ vehicles. The massive Big Top is 11,824 square feet while the area of the wall of the tent is 3,912 square feet. The Big Top will hold 1,500 guests for each performance.
The advance ticket sale price for adults will be $10 and children 2 to 11 years old will be $6. Advance tickets will be available at Charlestown City Hall, Charlestown Clerk Treasurer’s Office, Copper Kettle, River Valley Bank, The New Washington State Bank, The Feed Store & Nursery, 62 Twist, Pizza King or online at www.kellymillercircus.com. Tickets on circus day will be $15 per adult and $7 per child.
There are a couple of fun contests that can also get you tickets for the great show.
Peanut Guessing Game
The Circus Peanut Guessing Game is one way to win tickets. Jars filled with peanuts will be on display at each of the ticket venues. You may guess how many peanuts are in the jar to win a family pass for 6 to the circus. The winner will be chosen on Friday, April 25. If the winner of the contest has already purchased tickets to the circus, the Charlestown Beautification Committee will make a refund until 3 p.m. on the day before the circus, Friday, May 2.
Another fun way to possibly win tickets to the circus will be a coloring contest. There will be two separate coloring contests. One will be sponsored by The New Washington State Bank and will offer first, second and third prizes in two age divisions, ages 7 and younger and ages 8 to 11. Youngsters will color a circus clown and then turn it into The New Washington State Bank located at 1083 Market Street in Charlestown. All entries must be received at the bank by April 24. The first place prize will be free admission for two adults and four children; the second place prize will be free admission for two adults and two children while the third place prize will be free admission for one adult and one child. (If tickets have already been purchased by a winner, you will be reimbursed for your purchased tickets).
The other coloring contest will be for the students at Jonathan Jennings Elementary School, Pleasant Ridge Elementary School, Henryville Elementary School, Silver Creek Primary School and Silver Creek Elementary School. The students will be able to color the circus clown and bring their entry to the circus when they attend. During the intermission, all the entries will be judged. The winner will receive a prize from the Kelly Miller Circus.
The circus is be a fundraiser for the Charlestown Beautification Committee.
