|Silver Creek’s season ends at Washington Regional|
Silver Creek faithful traveled the little over two hours last Saturday morning to Washington High School to cheer on their Dragons. The sea of orange and student cheerblock in all white got their money’s worth as the Dragons battled the Class A No. 1 Pirates of Greensburg. Silver Creek and Greensburg traded leads and baskets until late in the third quarter. The Pirates used a 9-2 run to pull away from the Dragons and eventually capture the 70-60 opening game Regional win.
The Pirates opened the ballgame with a 8-0 run. Silver Creek junior guard Nick Tinsley got the Dragons on the scoreboard at the 5:12 mark when he drilled two from the charity stripe for the 8-2 Greensburg advantage.
The Dragons defense got a stop at the other end of the court before junior Gabe Bauer drained a triple to cut the Pirate lead to three, 8-5, at the 4:34 mark of the first quarter of play. Greensburg then answered the three with one of their own from senior guard Bryant McIntosh.
Silver Creek’s Tinsley connected with a jumper to cut the lead to four, 20-16, with just 19 seconds left in the period. Greensburg’s McIntosh got a lay in at the buzzer for the 22-16 Pirate lead at the end of the first stanza.
The Dragons found their shooting touch in the second quarter. Silver Creek went on a 10-0 run to open the period. A bucket from junior forward Jake Steele began the run before a drive from Bauer at the 5:24 mark gave the Dragons their first lead, 23-22. Tinsley immediately drilled a three from the corner to push the Silver Creek lead to 26-22 and force a Greensburg timeout at the 4:19 mark of the first half.
The Dragons outscored Greensburg, 12-5, in the second to hold the 28-27 halftime lead.
Silver Creek sophomore center Christian Reed went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the opening minutes of the third quarter to knot the ballgame at 33. Greensburg’s Ryan Welage recorded an old-fashioned three point play followed up by a triple from senior Collin Rigney to push the Pirates ahead 42-35 and force a Dragons timeout.
Greensburg pushed their lead to 10 on a dunk and free throw from senior forward Sean Sellers with just under a minute to play in the third quarter.
The Pirates outscored the Dragons 24-13 in the stanza to enjoy the 51-41 lead heading into the last eight minutes of play.
Silver Creek senior forward Zach Davidson recorded the first points in the final quarter for the Dragons at the 5:26 mark as Greensburg continued to pull away.
The Dragons would not give up as senior guard Shae Durham drained back-to-back threes to cut the Greensburg lead to 10, 64-54, with 1:53 remaining in the ballgame. Silver Creek would not come any closer as the Pirates pulled out the 70-60 win.
The Dragons were led by Gabe Bauer with 15 points while Zach Davidson added 13. Shae Durham chipped in 11 and Nick Tinsley added 10.
The Pirates were led by Bryant McIntosh with a game-high 18 points. Sean Sellers added 17 in the win. Macy Holdsworth and Ryan Welage chipped in 14 points.
Silver Creek finished the season at 15-9. The Pirates went on to win the Regional crown, 73-50, over Evansville Memorial Saturday night.
The Dragons said goodbye to three seniors including: Shae Durham, Brooks Howell and Zach Davidson.
