A local man, Norman K. Knight, is being detained in the Washington County Detention Center and faces charges of attempted murder, criminal recklessness, and resisting law enforcement.

The charges stem from Knight’s alleged involvement in a domestic dispute that took place Friday (March 14).

The dispute took place a short-time after a child custody exchange.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department Roger Newlon, Knight allegedly shot John Dukes under his right arm.

Dukes picked up his daughter without incident, Newlon said.

Newlon said that after Dukes picked up his daughter, who is between 11 and 12 years of age, he pulled off the side of the road to use the bath room.

Moments later, Newlon said, Knight drove past and  the two had words.

“As Dukes came around, Knight pulled a .22 over the top of his car and fired a shot,” Newlon said.

Knight drove away and Newlon said Dukes yelled for his daughter to call 911 and did manage to drive a short distance, before pulling off the road.

Dukes was flown by air ambulance to University of Louisville Hospital, where Newlon said at last check he was still in stable condition.

Newlon said that the daughters mother said there were no words during the exchange.

“In fact, she said Knight was in the house and didn’t even come out when Dukes picked up his daughter,” Newlon said.

Knight was taken into custody later that night when he returned to his residence.
