High school girls basketball fans had to wait for the excitement of Semi-Final action as the inclement weather postponed Friday night’s scheduled games until Saturday morning.

The Sectional 30 Semi-Final round was played in a Regional style format with the host Lady Pirates facing the Warriorettes of Scottsburg in the first game on Saturday morning. The second contest pitted the Lady Cubs of Madison and the Silver Creek Lady Dragons.

The Lady Pirates advanced to the Championship contest with a 70-55 win over Scottsburg while Madison turned back Silver Creek, 60-45.

The Lady Pirates began the contest on a 9-0 run capped by a lay in by junior guard Kaitlynn Henning. The opening run also featured a triple from junior guard Shelby Goedeker. The run forced a timeout by Scottsburg at the 5:03 mark.

The Warriorettes did not find the scoreboard until the 4:15 mark when senior forward Kelsey Smith recorded a lay in.

Charlestown’s Henning nailed a running jumper at the buzzer to push the Charlestown lead to 17-9 after the first quarter of play.

The second period seen the teams play evenly as Charlestown added 13 points to the scoreboard while Scottsburg put up 12. Scottsburg’s Kelsey Smith nailed two from the charity stripe with 2.8 seconds in the half to cut the Lady Pirate lead to nine, 30-21, heading into the halftime break.

Scottsburg senior forward Ashley Elliott drilled a three with 3:04 in the quarter to cut the Charlestown lead to 10 before she recorded an old-fashioned three point play at the 2:38 mark to cut the Lady Pirate lead to seven, 38-31.

Charlestown pushed the lead back to 48-31 with two old-fashioned three point plays in the last minute of the third quarter, one from senior center Megan Brooks and one from Henning.

The Lady Pirates held the 48-33 lead heading into the final eight minutes of play.

The Lady Warriorettes made a run in the final quarter to cut the Charlestown lead to seven, 53-46, with 4:56 left in the contest, but that would prove to be as close as they would come.

The Lady Pirates held off the Scottsburg surge for the 70-55 win and right to advance to the Sectional 30 championship.

Charlestown (15-7) was led by Kaitlynn Henning with 20 points while Megan Brooks added 14.

Scottsburg (15-6) was led by Ashley Elliott with 18 points and Kelsey Smith chipped in 17 in the loss.

The second semi-final found both teams take a few minutes to find the scoreboard as Madison’s Olivia Crozier drilled two from the free throw line at 6:34 mark to open the scoring. The Lady Cubs went on a 10-2 run capped by a Crozier old-fashioned three point play at the 4:17 mark.

Both teams had great ball movement in the opening period looking for the best shot. Silver Creek freshman Lauren Polston picked off a Madison pass for the steal and lay in at the 3:19 mark to cut the Madison lead to five, 10-5.

The Lady Cubs recorded two from behind the arc to finish the opening quarter. Madison held the 20-9 lead heading into the second quarter.

Silver Creek sophomore Bailee Popp recorded a bucket at the 7:36 mark to cut the Madison lead to nine, 20-11. Teammate Tori Martin drilled a triple at the 45.7 mark before Madison’s Whitney Wynn answered with an old-fashioned three point play. The Lady Cubs pushed their lead to 35-18 heading into the halftime break.

The Lady Dragons outscored the Lady Cubs in the second half, 27-23, as Polston recorded nine of her team high 12 points in the final quarter.

The Lady Cubs’ lead was just too much as Silver Creek fell 60-45. Madison advanced to the Sectional Championship contest.

Silver Creek (7-16) was led by Lauren Polston with 12 while Bailee Popp chipped in 11.

The Lady Cubs were led by Whitney Wynn with 15 points while Olivia Crozier added 13 in the win.

Silver Creek had three seniors play their last game for the Lady Dragons including Tori Martin, Shelby Shultz and Casie Toby.
