|Borden holds on after late charge by Rock Creek|
Saturday night the Borden Braves hosted the Rock Creek Lions. Though Borden controlled the first three quarters the fourth was another story. Borden did work their way through winning 67 to 62.
In the first half the Braves exerted a great deal of control over the game. Their offense was strong and their defense solid. Giving up four inches plus per man to the Rock Creek front line the Braves pulled down their share of rebounds. The Braves tough defense kept the Lions from getting many open shots. Borden hit five three point shoots, three from Caleb Hart to take the half time lead 30 to 12.
Before the half Gedoen Nzombi at 6’8” was the only player of Rock Creek’s front line to score with six points. In the third Nzombi along with Ronald Karenzi at 6’6” and Jeremiah Wilkinson teamed up for 10 of their 19 points. Rock Creek found some offense near the basket and hit some shots.
The Braves virtually matched their scoring output with 18 points from five players. Josh Vollstedt hit his second three and Brian McGee hit a three to become the fourth Borden player to do so in the game. This kept Borden ahead 48 to 31.
The fourth quarter is when the game became interesting. In the first four minutes the Lions went outside to their guards to outscore the Braves 12 to 6 and pull within 10 point at 53 to 43. With a little over three minutes to play the Lions had pulled within five points fueled by their third of four threes in the quarter.
The Braves answered with a three from Hart, his fourth. The Lions would not give up and pushed to within a two point deficit. But the Braves going to the line and hitting 12 of 15 free throws in the quarter managed to open up the lead late in the fourth to win 67 to 62.
Borden’s Vick used his strength inside to rebound and score while Vollstedt and Hart hit from outside to open the floor up. This combined with solid play from McGee, Gilliam and Craddock say the Braves playing as a team. This is what they will have to do to take their sectional.
After the game Borden coach Nash commented, “We managed to take them out of their game in the first half, the second half they were able to play the game they wanted.” When asked about the fourth quarter, “We didn’t do anything different, they hit some shots and we didn’t”. Nash also commented he thought McGee played well and he thought Vick rebounded strongly throughout the game.
Leading scorers for Borden were: Vollstedt 15, Vick 14, Hart 14 and Cody Craddock with 11.
Leading scorers for Rock Creek: Will Brown 18 and Karenzi with 10.
