|Borden Lady Braves beat WW|
The Borden Lady Braves (12-2) were able to hold off a late run by the West Washington Lady Senators (11-5) to come away with a 61-55 basketball victory Tuesday, January 28th in Borden.
The teams were evenly matched during the first quarter of play. Early 2 point shots made by the Lady Braves Shelby Kirchgessner and Carson Casey were matched by the Lady Senators Shana Keller who banked in a 3 point shot and added a 2 point shot after an offensive rebound. Lady Senator Shelby Springer was fouled with less than a minute to play in the quarter and made both free throw attempts to help give West Washington the lead 9-8 at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter started out as the first had ended with the teams trading baskets. The Lady Braves were able to tie the game (15-15) with a pair of free throws by Carson Casey with 4:38 left in the quarter. Borden’s Kristen Nestor followed by hitting back-to-back 3 point shots to put Borden in the lead. Outside shooting by Nestor, and the inside play by Casey helped the Lady Braves outscore the Lady Senators 19 to 11 in the second quarter to take a 27-20 halftime lead.
The Lady Senators went to work inside at the start of the third quarter. Kalen Nice was fouled after an offensive rebound and hit both free throw attempts and Shana Keller hit a 2 point shot to cut the Borden lead to only three points at 29-26. The game remained a one possession game during most of the quarter with the Lady Senators Chance Sizemore hitting a long 3 point shot to make the score 37-40 in favor of Borden. The Lady Braves extended the lead by finishing the third quarter with strong defensive play. After making a pair of free throws, Lady Brave Abby Ellis came away with as steal and added 2 points with a layup. The quarter ended with another Lady Brave steal and a 2 point shot at the buzzer by Kristen Nestor. The third quarter ended with a 46-37 Borden lead.
The Lady Braves expanded the lead in the fourth quarter to 14 points (53-39) with 6:25 left to play. The Lady Senators then began to chip away at the Borden lead. A 3 point shot by Shana Keller and later, a layup by Shelby Springer, pulled the Lady Senators to within 5 points (51-56) with 1:56 left in the game. Missed free throws by Borden and a made 2 point shot by Springer allowed West Washington to pull within 4 points with 6.2 seconds left. Two made free throw attempts by Shelby Kirchgessner with 5.0 seconds on the clock were enough to hold off the late rally by West Washington and to seal the win for Borden.
Shana Keller of West Washington led the scoring with 25 points. Borden had a balanced offense with four players scoring in double digits led by Kristen Nestor with 18 points and Abby Ellis with 15 points.
