The Harrison County Community Foundation Board has approved a Signature Grant request from the Lanesville Community Schools. The award of up to $149,500 will be used to rebuild and improve the school’s track surface, field event areas, and soccer field enclosure. Since this project is on school property, a match from the school and other sources will be required to complete the entire project.
The track is used by the school’s physical education classes, the track team, and by community members on a daily basis. However, the track has a number of cracks and drainage issues and is in such bad shape that all the home track meets have been cancelled for the last several years. The track complex is also used for other community events, primarily during the Lanesville Heritage Weekend.
This renovation project will require removing the existing track surface. After new layers of rock and asphalt are installed, a rubberized surface will be added to the top layers of the track. Drainage improvements will be included to extend the life of the track.
Areas for field events such as the high jump, long jump, discus, and shot put will also be renovated. Additionally a three foot wide concrete apron will be installed around the perimeter of the track for walking and spectators. New bleachers, accommodating 200 spectators, will also be installed. To finish out the project a chain-link fence will be added around the circumference of the track.
