Lady Lions hitting their stride PDF Print E-mail
The Salem High School girls’ basketball team started the year with just two wins in their first 10 games.
Down 10 points late in a first round game against Henryville in the First Harrison Bank Holiday Tournament, a three pointer from Laken White not only salvaged the game, but maybe the season.
The Lady Lions finished that game on an improbably run that saw them beat the host Hornets 51-45.
They followed that with a surprise 43-36 win over Eastern in the championship game of the tournament.
If that wasn’t enough the Lady Lions continued their run last Saturday with a 43-40 win at Borden.
It was the first loss of the season for the Lady Braves.
Salem sophomore Sadie Soliday admitted that the three-point shot against Henryville was the spark her team needed.
Salem is now 5-8 and will host a 4-7 Mitchell team. Thursday, before embarking on a tough stretch.
“I knew we would eventually start playing this way,” said Head Coach Jerry Hickey. “I just wasn’t sure if I would be here long enough to see it.”
In the tournament Soliday and junior Alex Davidson was named to the all tournament team.
Davidson was also named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
“I think we have the best player in Southern Indiana,” Hickey said. “Now, I understand that BNL is loaded and have a lot of talent, but outside of them, I think Alex is as good as there is.”
Thursday’s game at home against Mitchell will get underway at 7:30 p.m. or 20 minutes after the junior varsity game, which gets underway at 6.
