|Borden Dominates SAC opponents|
Friday night Borden traveled to South Central for their first Conference game after the Lanesville game was snowed out. Then Saturday night they were at home against Crothersville. Both nights Borden dominated early taking a 23 point win Friday and a 32 point win Saturday.
Friday night against South Central Borden ended the first quarter with a 12 to 8 lead. They seemed in control of the game yet South Central was fighting back. In the second Calib Hart came off the bench for two 3-pointers to help Borden pull out to a 33 to 19 lead.
The third quarter Borden lost some of it intensity but managed to hold on to a 39 to 28 lead at the end of the quarter. The fourth they got wound back up behind Josh Vollstedt’s pair of three’s and four free throws. They rolled off their biggest quarter with 23 points to win, pulling away 62-39.
Coach Nash was not overly impressed with his team, “There were many things we could have done better, we have a lot of work to do.”
Leading the Braves for the night were Garrett Vick with 19, Josh Vollstedt 15, plus Zach Gillam and Cody Craddock with 9 each.
Saturday night at home against Crothersville was a similar game. Crothersville came out in the first three minutes and held a 6-4 lead. Then Borden rolled off nine straight points and rolled on to a 31-10 lead for the quarter. The quarter was highlighted with Josh Vollstedt picking up a pair of threes and 10 points for the quarter and Caleb Hart coming off the bench with a pair of threes. Borden gave up three points of their lead in the second to go in at half leading 43 to 23.
Neither teamed lit it up in the third with Borden building their lead to 57-33 by the end. The fourth quarter saw a lot of play off of Borden’s bench. Caleb Hart picked up his fourth 3 for the game accompanied by Reilly Gray scoring nine points including a 3. Borden finished the game with an 81-49 win.
Coach Nash said he wasn’t really pleased with the defense over all, “We got a little complacent, maybe a little lackadaisical. I thought the bench could have played much better defense.”
Leading scorers for the night were Josh Vollstedt and Caleb Hart both with 14, Garrett Vick 13, Zack Gillam 10, and Cody Craddock and Reilly Gray with 9 each.
For the weekend Vick played well and provided a strong presence rebounding scoring 32 points, Vollstedt handled the ball well at guard and contributed 29 points while Gillam picked up 19 points and played strong defense under the goal. But a big surprise was the offense off the bench Saturday night. They picked up 31 points total with 22 coming in the fourth when they got most of their playing time.
Borden goes back into action Friday, December 20th against Eastern in the Holiday tournament in Salem. They will also play in one of the two games Saturday night.
