This event was established 9 years ago to honor the memory of Kelsey Martin. She was an enthusiastic freshman at Floyd Central High School when she died unexpectedly of an aneurysm in August 2004. She was active in her school, church, and community. She loved tennis and was regularly seen on the courts. She shared her love of tennis with her friends and encouraged many of them to take up the sport. It is in that spirit that this tournament continues from year to year. It averages 120 players each year for the three-day event; local players and players from surrounding areas such as Jasper, Bloomington, Cincinnati, Columbus, and Louisville. It is a United States Tennis Association (USTA) sanctioned event toward which players can earn points for their individual rankings. The boys and girls tennis teams at Highland Hills Middle School have benefited from the support of this tournament. It provides equipment and awards for both teams. It provides funds to send boys and girls to summer tennis programs and camps in the area.
And most importantly, it provides scholarships that are awarded each year to qualifying seniors at Floyd Central High School.
