Jalen McCoy named Player of the Week PDF Print E-mail

Bryant McIntosh made multiple big plays in helping Greensburg capture the Indiana Class 3A state championship, and the Pirates junior headlines this week’s IBCA/Subway Player of the Week recipients.

McIntosh is joined by Carmel senior Michael Volovic, Bowman Academy sophomore Davon Dillard and Borden senior Jalen McCoy as honorees for the week of March 18-23 in the awards program overseen by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
The 6-3 McIntosh scored 25 points with six rebounds and four assists in leading Greensburg to a 73-70 come-from-behind victory over Fort Wayne Concordia in overtime. After never leading throughout regulation, McIntosh sank a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter to force overtime. In the extra period, the Indiana State recruit made a basket to give the Pirates (26-1) the lead for good at 71-70 in the thrilling contest. For the game, McIntosh made 9-of-18 field goals, including 1-of-2 3-pointers, and 6-of-6 free throws.
Volovic was the catalyst for Carmel as the Greyhounds knocked off Cathedral 57-53 for the Class 4A championship. A 5-9 senior who will walk on at Butler University next season, Volovic scored 19 points with three rebound and seven assists as Carmel (25-2) captured the 4A crown for the second consecutive season. He made 7-of-12 shots, 1-of-3 3-pointers and 4-of-6 free throws en route to his game-high scoring.
The 6-4 Dillard dropped in 24 points with six rebounds, three assists and three steals to propel Bowman Academy to an 86-73 victory over Linton for the Class 2A title in one of the high-scoring title games on record. Dillard’s performance -- 10-of-15 shooting plus 4-of-6 free throws -- helped the Eagles (18-9) become the first boys’ basketball program to claim state titles in two classes. Bowman Academy was the Class A champion in 2010.
McCoy propelled Borden to its first state title in any team sport with a 55-50 victory over Triton in Class A. The 6-1 senior guard scored 15 points, including two crucial fourth-quarter 3-pointers, while adding three rebounds, one assist and one steal for the Braves (24-3). He finished by making 6-of-13 shots from the field, including 3-of-8 from long range.
This is the fifth season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the first season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a primary sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its third season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “play hard and eat fresh.”
Player of the Week winners are chosen each week from each of the IHSAA’s three districts. This is the final week for the 2012-13 season. Please look for an announcement in early November for nomination procedures for the 2013-14 season.
