March 2013 is Disability Awareness Month! The campaign theme this year is “Community Connections.” This year’s poster features a fully connected, livable community with appropriate housing, supportive and accessible community services, and physical and environmental feature that allow everyone to live independently. The text reminds us that if our communities are to grow and prosper, they must be accessible, allow for civic engagement and encourage neighbors to support one another.
For the tenth consecutive year Blue River Services, Inc. is hosting their annual Disability Awareness Essay & Poster Contest. Students at area schools have the opportunity to express their interpretation of this year’s theme “Community Connections” as a poster or through writing by participation in the contest. The essay and poster contest is open to students enrolled in the 3rd through 8th grades in Harrison, Crawford, Washington and Scott County schools. There are three divisions: 3rd & 4th grades, 5th & 6th grades, and 7th & 8th grades. The entry deadline is April 5, 2013.
Judges will select a first place winner in the essay contest and another first place winner in the poster contest in each division at every participating school. Each school winner receives a First Place trophy and the Grand Champion winner from each county will receive a $25.00 gift card. Contest winners will be announced and the trophies will be presented at the schools awards programs in May.
