Louisville junior right-hander Jeff Thompson was selected as BIG EAST Baseball Pitcher of the Week on Monday following his strong performance in the nationally ranked Cardinals’ win over Alabama last weekend.
Thompson (Greenville, Ind./Floyd Central HS) allowed only two hits while striking out four in seven shutout innings to help guide Louisville to its 6-0 series-clinching win over the Crimson Tide on Saturday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium. This marks the second time Thompson has been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week in 2013 after he previously won the award on Feb. 18 for his 12-strikeout, shutout performance against USF during the opening weekend of the season.
Saturday’s performance against Alabama marked the third time in his four starts this season Thompson has not allowed a run. Overall, he is 4-0 with a miniscule 0.73 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 24.2 innings this season while opposing batters are hitting only .155 against him.
Louisville junior infielder Ty Young was also named to this week’s BIG EAST honor roll after hitting .455 last week against Alabama with three RBI and three runs scored. The highlight of the weekend for Young came on Sunday when he connected for the walk-off single to give the Cardinals an 8-7 victory in 10 innings against the Crimson Tide and complete the weekend sweep.
Up next, No. 4 Louisville hosts Purdue on Elementary School Day at Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday at noon ET and admission is free. That will be followed by a three-game weekend slate against Xavier starting Friday at 3 p.m.
