The Silver Creek Dragons traveled to Charlestown for the opening round of Sectional 30 play last Tuesday evening. Silver Creek (9-12) was trying to avenge a regular season 39-23 loss on January 11 to the Braves of Brownstown Central (21-1).
The Dragons played tough throughout the ballgame as both teams were fighting for the right to advance to the Sectional Semi-final round.
Brownstown was too much for the Dragons as they took the 49-37 win.
Silver Creek found the scoreboard first and lead in the early minutes of the game. The Braves took their first lead, 6-5, at the 3:37 mark of the first quarter. The teams played evenly throughout the first stanza as Brownstown held the slight 11-9 advantage at the end of the first.
The second quarter had the Dragons fighting for loose balls and clawing their way to the half only down by 20-19. Silver Creek junior guard Shae Durham tied the ballgame at 13 with a lay up at the 4:11 mark of the half. Durham tallied six of his team-high 11 points in the second period including a four point play at the 1:27 mark to excite the Dragon faithful.
After the halftime break the Dragons and Braves played close as Brownstown would push the lead only to be cut by the Dragons. Silver Creek’s Brooks Howell cut the lead to four with a bucket at the 2:11 mark. Teammate Lucas Barnett nailed a shot to cut the Braves’ lead to a mere bucket, 28-26, at the 1:39 mark of the quarter. The Braves held the 32-28 advantage at the end of three quarters of play.
The final quarter of play seen the Braves explode for 17 points while the Dragons only tallied nine. Brownstown’s Brett McCory had eight points in the quarter on his way to a game high 24 points. Silver Creek’s Zach Davidson was knocked to the floor on a three point attempt. He calmly drilled all three from the charity stripe to cut the Brownstown lead to one, 34-33, at the 5:17 mark. Durham game the Dragons the 35-34 lead at the 4:36 mark when he hit both free throws. The lead would be the last for Silver Creek. The Braves went six-of-eight from the charity stripe in the fourth to help seal the win.
Brownstown moved on in Sectional play to face Salem in the semi-final round.
Silver Creek finished the season at 9-12. The Dragons will lose four seniors including Layne Taylor, Lucas Barnett, Trent DeHate and Nick Arbogast.
Silver Creek was led by Shae Durham with 11 points. Jake Steele added seven and Brooks Howell chipped in six.
Brownstown was led by Brett McCory with 24 points. Skylar Thompson added 14 points in the win.
