The Charlestown Pirate Wrestling team just missed winning their third consecutive win at the SIWC by placing second in the 14 team tournament at Southwestern. Every Pirate contributed to a great day of wrestling.
The 13 pirates that wrestled all placed in the tournament, marking a great team achievement. Sophomore Bryant Haynes dominated every opponent of the day including a pin in the finals to take first in the 120 pounds weight class. This was his first SIWC championship. Senior Seth McCutcheon and freshman Zach Higdon placed second in their weight classes. McCutcheon wrestled well despite not feeling well on the day. Higdon did his best wrestling of the year and shows a lot of promise as a freshman. Luke Woods and Zach Green all placed third in their weight classes. Woods continues to get better and more aggressive every week.
Coach Doherty has been proud of Zach Green’s ability to give a quality performance each week. Artemio Gomez placed fourth in the 132 pound weight class. Freshman Tanner Smith debuted in his first Varsity tournament wrestling up a weight class in the 113 pounders and took home fifth place. Also placing fifth in the 152 weight class was senior Cameron Heil and Esdras Hernandez in the 195 weight class. Sophomore Cameron Hopson stepped up for the team by wrestling up two weight classes and respectfully placed sixth. Also placing sixth was Austin Church in the 145 weight class and Dakota Stevenson in the 285 pound weight class. Freshman Jeffery Lopez placed eighth in the 220 pound weight class.
