This past fall, Charlestown Middle School hosted Rachel’s Challenge for students and the Charlestown community. The program was so well received that Charlestown High School, Jonathan Jennings Elementary, and Pleasant Ridge Elementary will now host Rachel’s Challenge for students, parents, and the community.
Rachel’s Challenge is a series of student empowering programs and strategies that equip students and adults to combat bullying and ally feelings of isolation and despair by creating a culture of kindness and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999.
qA few weeks after the tragedy, Rachel’s father spoke to a Congressional House Judiciary Committee regarding issues of school violence. His speech has become one of the most widely read on the internet. Shortly afterwards, he founded Rachel’s Challenge, a bullying and violence abatement program. Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people every year.
Pleasant Ridge Elementary held an assembly for students yesterday. Jonathan Jennings Elementary and Charlestown High School will hold their student assemblies today, Wednesday, January 16, both at 9:30 a.m.
Tonight, Wednesday, January 16, Charlestown High School will also host a Rachel’s Challenge community event in the school’s auditorium.
qThe event will begin at 7 p.m. and is open to the entire Charlestown community. Charlestown High School is located at #1 Pirate Place in Charlestown, Indiana.
