Salem Community School Superintendent Dr. Lynn Reed said she learned Monday, Dec. 10 that the Monroe County School Board was likely going to re-hire SHS Athletic Director Mo Moriarity at their meeting Dec. 11.
Since the Monroe meeting was a day later than the SCS board met, Reed added an item to the agenda so she could begin the search for a new AD without waiting until the board meets again in January.
“I didn’t want to wait one month before I had permission to start looking at a few possibilities for athletic director,” Reed said. “I added an agenda item requesting permission to accept Moriarity’s resignation letter and to post and advertise for his position and subsequently fill that position before we meet again.”
Reed said the search for a new AD will not affect the search for Salem’s next football coach.
One thing that is not clear is whether or not the new AD will start immediately or after Moriarity leaves at the end of the school year.
“We are still discussing the possibilities of how to handle that,” she said. “I want a smooth transition.”
Reed said the school corporation was spoiled by former Athletic Director Randy Johnson and all the duties he did.
The problem she said, is that he was at the school for so long, he just did what needed to be done.
“It was incredibly difficult to lose Randy Johnson from a personal standpoint for all of us,” she said. “But Mr. Johnson had been here many years and was loyal, committed and a lot of his day-to-day operations were in his head. He did it automatically. He didn’t keep a detailed calendar. He was so valuable to us and I don’t think we found out everything he did until he was gone.
Transitions are important and we didn’t have the opportunity to transition when Mr. Johnson passed away. We have an opportunity to transition here. I want to know who is going to be in that position before Mr. Moriarity exits. As far as time-line, I want to be prepared in case something happens that I don’t know all the information.”
Moriarity said he will not start his new position as assistant athletic director and football coach at Bloomington South until June.
