Lady Lions continue streak over WW PDF Print E-mail

The last time the Salem High School girls’ basketball team lost to West Washington, 2003,  most of this year’s group of players were in their early elementary years.

The Lady Lions assured the record books that the streak would reach 10 years as they turned back the visiting Lady Senators 50-41.
West Washington’s loss was due to a lack of opportunities. They held Salem scoreless for much of the third quarter and only allowed four points during that stretch, but couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the basket on their end.
One trip for the Lady Senators saw them get four shots at the basket and non of them went in.
The Lady Lions withstood the surge and improved to 4-1 on the young season.
They were led in scoring by Krista Baker with 14 points and sophomore Alex Davidson, who was identified as a junior in this paper last week, added 13.
Treasure Hurst gave Salem a third player in double figures with 12 points.
The Lady Lions took control of the game early with an 18-11 spurt in the first quarter and they extended that margin to 36-24 at halftime.
They won the third quarter, as well, and the Lady Senators were never able to get over the hump.
In a junior varsity game against Madison on Nov. 17, Salem lost 34-16.
The JV Lady Lions fell behind 8-0 in the opening quarter, before putting eight on the board in the second.
The Lady Cubs maintained that eight-point advantage through the third quarter, 23-15 and never looked back.
Voyles and Sadie Soliday scored five points each for the junior varsity and Amber Kilburn added four.
Salem was back in action Monday against Eastern. Results from that game were not available at press time.
Their next game will be Thursday at home against Orleans.
