Car flips in Saturday wreck and pins driver underneath; inflicts fatal injuries PDF Print E-mail




A young man died of chest injuries in a one-car accident on Leota Road early on Saturday morning, June 30.

Dereck W. Combs, 21, Austin, was traveling west on Leota Road shortly after 2 a.m. when the 1994 Toyota Tercel he was driving ran off the road about 2,000 feet west of its intersection with Ray Road. The car had apparently flipped several times, throwing Combs out. He was pinned underneath the wreckage.

By the time rescuers got the the vehicle, Combs had died. Scott County Coroner Kevin Collins pronounced the young man deceased at the scene.

Combs had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, noted the report prepared by Deputy Joe Johnson. Property damage was estimated at up to $10,000.

Those who assisted at the scene included Scott County EMS, Sheriff Dan McClain and Deputy James Shelton as well as Julian's Wrecker Service.

Combs was raised in Austin and had been attending Ivy Tech. He was a member of Grace Covenant Church of God in Austin.

He is survived by his parents, two brothers and a stepbrother, two stepsisters and his grandparents.

Calling at the Buchanan Funeral Home in Austin is planned from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday) and after 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 5.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Steve Gwaltney will officiate.

Burial will be in Spurgeon Cemetery east of Austin.
