? If you look over the statistics of the high school football game between visiting Salem and host North Harrison from Friday night, you’d think you were looking at a close game.
In fact, in looking at some stats, you might even think that North Harrison might have won the contest.
The Cougars had 10 first downs to 6 for the Lions. The hosts also had only three penalties for a total of 25 yards, while Salem had 6 penalties for a total of 40 yards penalized.
The yards rushing were also very close, with Salem leading 267-218 in this category.
What killed North Harrison and helped Salem immensely were the specialty teams, such as kickoff return.
Kyle Martin returned the opening Cougar kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown at 11:39 in the 1st quarter, and Salem led 6-0.
Almost two minutes later, Salem’s Eric Zink ran in a second touchdown from 3 yards out. The conversion, a pass from Christian Chastain to Rhett Huffaker, was good. Salem led 14-0 just over two minutes into the game.
Chastain then got into the act again with a 26 yard touchdown run (8:48) in the 1st period, increasing Salem’s lead to 20-0. The conversion run failed.
Justin Beavers, Logan Walker, and Chastain had touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, with final carries of 24, 12, and 31 yards to put them into the end zone for the Lions.
