Class of 2012 ready for graduation exercises on Friday evening at AHS PDF Print E-mail

Seventy-three diplomas will be presented to seniors at Austin High School on Friday evening, May 25.
The Class of 2012 will conducts its graduation exercises in the Lady Eagles’ gymnasium starting at 8 p.m. on Friday. People attending are encouraged to get there early to get good seats. Those who cannot attend will be able to watch the ceremony on Insight Cable TV Channel 25, thanks to the efforts of the local cable station, Scottcounty.tv.
Following the processional played by the Austin High School Band under the direction of Jason Hougland, Jacob Andrew Jones will provide opening remarks to the crowd and his fellow 72 seniors.
The AHS choir, led by director Kathy Sego, will sing “Do I Make You Proud Words.”
Student addresses will include Class Vice President Olivia Shawn Burchett, whose speech is entitled “Hard to Say Goodbye.” Kelly Lynn Cooper, Class President, will offer “Let’s Go Fishing,” and Allyson Rae Morris will talk on “With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.”
The AHS Band will then perform a medley of “Phantom of the Opera” music.
AHS Principal Sherman Smith will introduce the graduating senior class. Scott District 1 Superintendent Berley Goodin will award each a diploma.
Among those diplomas will be one presented to the parents of senior Matthew Charles Nugent. The 18-year-old died of injuries suffered in a car accident  earlier this spring.
Class President Cooper will lead the class in the ring and tassel ceremonies to mark their graduation.
Closing remarks will be given by Bailey Nicole Jeffries, class secretary.
Recessional music will be provided by the band as seniors stand and take their last walk as high school students around the gym. Odds are, there’ll be a few hats flying in the air as well, and everyone can then greet the new graduates as they remain in the gym for those final moments.
Sponsors of the Class of 2012 are Angela Rathert and Vanessa Eldridge. Class officers also include treasurer Sean Tyler Hurt.
The class motto is “Live as if you would die today; learn as if you would live forever.” Their class song is “Tattoos on this Town” sung by Jason Aldeen. The class flower is the white rose and class colors are navy blue and silver.
Two students are graduating with highest distinction, having maintained grade point averages (GPAs) of 3.9 or higher. They are Olivia Shawn Burchett and Jacob Andrew Jones.
High distinction was achieved by seven students, who maintained GPAs of 3.7 to 3.899. The group includes Kelly Lynn Cooper, Kassandra Lynn Cornette, Bailey Nicole Jeffries, Jeremy Joseph Johnson, Erica Nicole Moore, Allyson Rae Morris and Nolan Roy Pruett.
Those who are graduating with distinction, with GPAs from 3.5 to 3.699, are Dylan Wayne Everhart, Mary Elizabeth Rice and Christopher Wayne Williams.
Honors diplomas were earned by Emily Sophia Barrett, Olivia Shawn Burchett, Valerie Dawn Marie Campbell, Kelly Lynn Cooper, Kassandra Lynn Cornette, Ashley Mae Cravens, Rodney Kameron Draper, Dylan Wayne Everhart, Krisheena Rachelle Goines, Jonathan Tyler Howell, Bailey Nicole Jeffries, Jeremy Joseph Johnson, Jacob Andrew Jones, Erica Nicole Moore, Allyson Rae Morris, Nolan Roy Pruett, Mary Elizabeth Rice, Stephanie Gayle Scott, Kyle Pearce Spicer and Christopher Wayne Williams.
