|CPD investigates school bus crash last Wednesday|
At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, Charlestown Officers were dispatched to the 10000 block of S.R. 62 in reference to an injury accident involving a Greater Clark County School Bus. Preliminary investigation revealed that bus number 126 was traveling west on S.R. 62 and was either stopped or was in the process of coming to a stop at the marked Railroad Crossing when the driver of small passenger truck collided into the rear of the bus.
The driver of the school bus, 63 year old R.D. Owens, Jr., observed that the passenger truck was quickly approaching the rear of the bus as though the driver did not see that the bus was coming to a stop. The bus driver attempted to accelerate to avoid an even bigger impact to both student passengers on the bus and to the driver of the passenger truck. The driver of the truck, who was identified as 33 year old Frank “Shane” Davidson of Charlestown had to be extricated by Charlestown Fire Department personnel and was air lifted by Stat Care to the University of Louisville Hospital.
It was reported that bus number 126 was carrying approximately 25 Charlestown High School and New Washington High School students who were enroute to both Jeffersonville High School and Prosser School of Technology in New Albany. At least five students reported minor injuries to both Police and EMS personnel. Two students were transported by EMS to Clark Memorial Hospital for minor injuries and three were released on the scene to their parents.
The investigation is still on-going while Police await toxicology results.
