? ?    The West Washington School Board appointed Brain Farmer to replace the vacant position of Richard Lambert who resigned effective August 1 at their recent meeting held on Monday, August 18.
    The board interviewed four potential candidates for the vacant position, Virgil Phelps, Marvin (Butch) Jenks, Duane Rippy and Brian Farmer.
    “I care about the education of my children and I care about the community.” said Farmer.
    Farmer has a lot of interaction with children. He has been an active volunteer in the community.
    Farmer will serve out the remainder of Lambert’s term until June 30, 2009.
    Heather Johnstone approached the board with the concern of buses not traveling private roads.
    Johnstone lives on Dogwood Valley Road and asked the board to allow buses to travel the private roadway.
    The board reaffirmed their position  that school buses are not permitted to travel down private roads.
    Johnstone requested the board to write a letter to the County Commissioners in support of making Dogwood Valley Road a county road with the board agreeing to do so.
    The board approved the dirt work for the baseball field to be completed by Temple and Temple for the amount of $18,500.
    The board also approved the rehire of the following Prime Times Aides, Sharon Hammond; Tammy Jones; Shirley Voyles, Amber Morrow, Terry Smith and Judy Nice.
    Under the recommendation of Principal Rosenbaum the board moved to hire Dana Farris as Prime Time Aide and under the recommendation of Superintendent Jackson Terry Bennett was hired as corporation bus drive for Route 8
    Member William Vancleave moved to hire Penny Harkness as Cape Specialist for the 2008-09 school year with a contract of $21,500.
    The following were approved and got coaching positions on a salary B schedule for 2008-09 school year:
    Eighth grade girls basketball, Keith Nance; seventh grade girls basketball, Jack Miller; elementary girls basketball coach, Barry Clements; boys jr. high track, Brentt Zelivetz, jr. high cross country, John Harkness; Varsity golf, Paul Stroud; jr. high golf, Barry Clements; elementary drama, Leah Stewart and Jadenna Young, high school drama, Sherry Wise; elementary music, Louise Stephan; graduation coordinator, Gina Rosenbaum; senior sponsors Sarah Haynes and Whitney Hall, junior sponsors, Ted Linton and Ophela Davis; prom sponsor, Gina Rosenbaum and Nanette Clements; yearbook and newspaper, Lee Wilson; academic coach assistant, Penny Harkness; science olympiad,
Sarah Haynes, department heads, Tom Wischmeier, Sarah Haynes, Rhonda Johnson, Kim Chastain, Sarah Atz, Jim Hughes and Phillip Bowsman.
    The increase in Mrs. Mahans hours and retirees remaining on the school insurance at cost were both tabled for further research.
    Vice-President Leslie Batt opened a public hearing on the 2009 budget with no one responding and the hearing was closed.
    A field trip for the Marching Band was approved to perform at the Martinsville Invitation.
    The next regular scheduled West Washington School Board meeting will be September 15, beginning approximately at 8 p.m.
