?? ? The quintessential end to a long summer is being planned by organizers of the annual Pig Roast in the Park, set for Friday and Saturday, August 8 and 9, in Beechwood Park in Scottsburg. Pig Roast in the Park is a festival that offers a casual, enjoyable experience to those who visit. There will be booths offering arts and crafts and festival-type fare. Plenty of tournaments are scheduled to start that Friday in softball, horseshoes, volleyball and tennis. Games for children are slated as well. A gospel sing is set for that Friday night, while Saturday will offer the annual Scott County American Idol competition as well as hog-calling and watermelon eating contests. A euchre tournament is also scheduled on Saturday for the public’s enjoyment. Of course, folks will come to buy pulled pork barbecue dinners on August 9, and everyone will be able to buy chances throughout the Pig Roast in the Park to win the miniature Kids House log cabin that appeals to both children and adults and is now on display at the Scottsburg Wal-Mart Super Center. Tickets are one for $2; three for $5; eight for $10; and 20 for $20. Proceeds will benefit the Scottsburg Beautification Committee, which is organizing Pig Roast in the Park. The winner of the 2008 Kids House will be announced at Beechwood Park at 9:15 p.m. Saturday. Don’t forget Friday night’s gospel program or the full line-up of music on Saturday that begins at 10 a.m. and ends late that evening. The gospel sing Friday night will start at 6 p.m. and conclude at 10 p.m. Those scheduled to perform include Corporate Praise, Fisherman’s Paradise Church, Greater Life Church, Northside Christian Band of Memphis and The FOG. All musical entertainment is free of charge throughout the festival. Just bring a lawn chair or blanket and sit down and enjoy. The co-ed softball tournament as well as the annual tennis challenge will begin Friday, August 8, as will the horseshoe tournament which starts at 6 p.m. Participants must bring their own horseshoes and pay the $3 entry fee to compete. More information about tournaments scheduled can be obtained by calling the Scottsburg Mayor’s Office at 752- 3169. Both the volleyball and euchre tournaments are scheduled for Saturday. Volleyball begins at 8 a.m. Craft booths, children’s games and concessions will be offered that day as well. The euchre tournament will follow the popular Pig Roast dinner at 7 p.m. Scott County America Idol will be offered from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday. Talented individuals age 14 years and under and 15 years and older are being invited to compete in the two divisions scheduled for American Idol. An entry fee of $10 is being charged per act if received at Scottsburg City Hall by Wednesday, August 8. After that date, the entry fee will be $15. Participants will report to the stage area at Beechwood Park no later than 9:30 a.m. on that Saturday. Those interested in competing can call the Mayor’s Office at 752-3169 to obtain more information. Other stage entertainment on Saturday will include: •1:00 p.m.: 31 East, a country and rock and pop band. •2:30 p.m.: Full Throttle, classic rock. •4:00 p.m.: Front Porch Revival, classic rock. •5:30 p.m.: Ratio featuring Holly Stewart, country and rock. •6:30 p.m.: Southern Comfort, country and rock. •8:00 p.m.: Lanny Hat and the Hard Tymes Band, country and rock. Both the watermelon-eating contest and the hog-calling contest are being planned for Saturday afternoon, but organizers have not yet set times for these competitions. No entry fee and no pre-registration are required for either. All ages can enter. Call 752-3169 for more information. Sumptuous pork dinners will be offered on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. at a bargain price of $6 for adults and $3 for children. The meal will include a generous portion of pork barbecue, bread, potato salad, cole slaw, dessert and a drink. Meals will be served at the park’s big shelterhouse. Word to the wise: Get there early. Sometimes, there’s just not enough barbecue to go around! Then, play your best hand in euchre. That tournament, set to start at 7 p.m., will last at the main shelterhouse as long as it takes to get an overall winner. Pig Roast in the Park is the annual festival organized by the Scottsburg Beautification Committee for the enjoyment of people who like a small festival atmosphere. Proceeds will benefit the Committee’s projects that beautify the community. |
