The Austin Lady Eagles met up with the Brownstown Lady Braves in the championship game of the Class 2A Sectionals on February 12th. This tough and exciting rivalry drew a large crowd for both squads but it was the Eagle faithful who walked away disappointed after a 53-49 defeat.
The Brownstown Braves kicked off the first quarter on a strong 12-4 run and drove down the lane to connect on many shots from the paint. Austin was missing the front end of everything until Kelly Hollan finally got a shot to go through and place the score at 16-10, Braves. At the midway mark the ailing Lady Eagles trailed 26-17.
The Lady Braves scored immediately after the break but Jessie Davidson got their lead back down to single digits as a floater went through the bottom of the net. Austin’’s woes were far from over, however, as Brownstown went on a 7-0 kick after being fouled on a three-pointer and going 3/3 from the line. This seemed to light the fuse that the Lady Eagles needed and a three-point play by Hollan got the squads within five 38-33, with the board still favoring Brownstown.
Samantha Wooten got the game down to three and Hollan slyly stole the ball as it was being passed back down the court. Her shot on that possession got the Eagles within one, 47-46. With .30 reading on the clock, Austin trailed 49-46 and took a time out to try to set up a play. When their shot was no good, they were forced to foul the Lady Braves and they successfully made both free throws. Mikaela Clark drilled a long shot at the buzzer but it was too late to make a difference for the Eagles as they were defeated 53-49 and closed their season up with a 15-9 record.
Scoring for Austin was Davidson 21, Gray 9, Hollan 9, Brenna Oeffinger 4, Kamry 3, Wooten 2, and Lyndsay Davidson 1.
