On Saturday, November 6, the 21 member high school cheer squad from Scottsburg captured the state title in New Castle in the Small Co-ed Division. The cheerteam qualified in a preliminary round a week earlier to advance to the Indiana Cheerleading State Championships. On Saturday, they beat out schools from Brownstown, Woodlan, New Haven, Mt. Vernon and Elkhart Central.
Many Scottsburg family members and friends were among the thousands packed in the legendary New Castle , one of the largest high school gyms in the country, to watch the competition. The cheerleaders delivered a spectacular performance which included a dance routine to Queen music which contained the lyrics “they make the rocking world go round.” The cheerteam definitely “rocked” the gym filled with 45 cheerteams and thousands of fans to bring home the state championship in their division. Other state champions were named in Class 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A and Large Co-ed. The team received a huge trophy and individual medals before getting their official state champion picture taken. They also received an escort around town by a Scottsburg firetruck upon their return home that evening.
The following girls make up the squad: seniors - Baylie Hubbard and Kelly Combs; juniors - Alicia Bowling, Kison Harlow, Briana Ingalls, Amber Montgomery, Heaven Richey, KaLisha Sandlin, and Trent West; Sophomores - Emily Duvall, Courtney Grammar, Lauren Harvey, Jessica Mills, Dakota Shepherd, and Brittney Walsh; and freshman - Amanda Amick, Hannah Foster, Kaitlyn Hollan, Lauren Howser, Sarah Jones, Kailee Lynn. The squad is coached by Cindy Howser, Klarinda Tutterow and Katrina Franklin.
The team express their appreciation to Derrick Clarkson, Celeste Bell, Allen McGowen and Jason Kendall for their help in putting together the winning routine.
