The 17th annual independence open tennis tournament was held July 22-24 and was sponsored this year by First Harrison Bank, Salem True Value hardware, Daniel R. Anderson, MD, Floyd Memorial Medical Group and the East Washington Lions Club.

The following are results from that event.
Youth Division
Girls 14-16 singles, First place Sierra Purlee (Pekin) defeated second place Brittany Campbell (salem) 6-0, 6-2.
Girls 16-18 doubles round robin, first place Kelly Holtshouser and Erica Frascella (Borden) defeated Niki Nale and Samantha Cusick (pekin) 0-6, 7-5, 6-1 and defeated Brittany Pollack and Alana Davey (Jeffersonville) 6-2, 6-0. In the second-place match, Nale and Cusick defeated Pollack/Davey 6-1,6-2.
Boys 14 singles, First place Ian Deiters (bloomington) def second place Alex Doebler (Pekin) 6-3, 6-4
In the consolation match, Grant Newcomb (Pekin) defeated Lyndon Yoder of Salem, 8-4.
Boys 14 doubles Round Robin, first place, Ian Deiters and Alex Jung (Bloomington) def Alex Doebler and Jordan Gray (Pekin) 6-4, 6-0 and defeated Matt Quillen & Terry Chism (Pekin) 6-0, 6-1.The second place team, doebler/gray defeated Quillen/Chism 6-2, 6-3.
Boys 16-18 singles, first place, Michael Doebler of Pekin defeated Jalen Brown of Salem, 6-2, 6-2. Chris Braun of Charlestown defeated Andrew Cullen of Georgetown, 12-2.
Adult Division
Woman’s Open round robin, Amanda Vance (Indianapolis) defeated Olivia Hazelip (Salem) 6-3, 6-0 and def Tristan Allen (Salem) 6-0, 6-2. Seconnd place went to Allen. She defeated Hazelip 6-2, 6-2.
Mixed doubles Jedd Vance and Amanda Vance (Indianapolis) defeated Tim Shipman and Sue Shipman (Pekin) 7-5, 6-0.
Mens Open Singles, Jedd Vance (Indianapolis) defeated Casey Hogan (South Central) 6-1, 6-3.
Men’s 45 + singles, Tom Doebler (Pekin) defeated Fred Nolan (Livonia) 6-2, 6-1.
Men’s doubles, Robert Klinglesmith (Salem) and Brent Richardson (Pekin) defeated Brad Bastian (Pekin) and Cary Ooley (Borden) 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.
