An eight-week program, this year the summer reading schedule offers weekly water-related activities at the three libraries. Children who register will be required to read a minimum of ten books over the eight-week period to qualify for weekly prize drawings and program-ending parties planned in Scottsburg, Austin and Lexington.“Water! Make a Splash: Read!” is the theme around which children ages three to eighth grade can enjoy the annual summer reading program at all three Scott County libraries.
First days of registration are set for after school on Thursday, June 3, at the Austin Public Library at 26 Union Street off U.S. Highway 31 North; after school on Friday, June 4, at the Scott County Public Library in downtown Scottsburg; and after school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, June 7, 8 and 9, at the Lexington Public Library.
There is no cost to sign up for the program. Some materials to be used for the water activities are provided through the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) and are geared to be informative and fun for all ages.
At the Austin Library, water-related activities are scheduled for summer readers from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. every Tuesday through June and July. Those dates are: June 8, 15, 22 and 29 and July 6, 13, 20 and 27.
Because of the lengthened school year for Scott District 2, water-related activities on Wednesday, June 9, at both Scottsburg and Lexington libraries will be held after school lets out. Hours on that Wednesday will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. On Wednesday, June 16, Scottsburg hours for activities will shift to 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Lexington's activities will be from 3 to 4 p.m. each Wednesday through the end of July. Dates are: June 9, 16, 23 and 30 and July 7, 14, 21 and 28.
Additionally, parents can bring their children to free story times at each of the libraries. At Austin and Scottsburg, story time is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. each Tuesday. At Lexington, story time is from 10 to 10:30 a.m. each Wednesday.
