?    ?A motorcyclist traveling on Boatman Road near Scottsburg on Saturday afternoon, July 12, was killed in an
accident involving a piece of farm equipment.
Brandel L. Napier, 42, Austin, struck a hay baler being pulled by a pickup truck driven by David M. Coates, 44,
Scottsburg, as Coates pulled across the southbound lane of the road west of Scottsburg to turn into a private drive
about 500 feet north of Weir Lane.
Coates told Deputy Joe Johnson that he did not see the 2006 Honda motorcycle being operated by Napier
southbound on Boatman Rd. As Coates, who had been headed north, turned, Napier apparently saw the piece of
equipment behind the Ford pickup and reportedly locked up his brakes trying to avoid striking it.
His actions were not successful. Napier was thrown from the cycle and suffered massive head injuries. He was not
wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Scott County EMS and both the Vienna and Scottsburg volunteer fire departments rushed to the scene. Napier
died at University of Louisville Hospital shortly after 6 p.m.
Napier was a foreman for B&D Communications Inc. in Underwood. His funeral is scheduled today (Wednesday)
at 1 p.m. at the Collins Funeral Home in Scottsburg.
The family has requested that memorials take the form of contributions to assist his children. Donations may be
arranged through the staff of the funeral home.
