Borden traveled to South Central (SC) Friday, December 11th. Borden came away with the victory but it took overtime to get it done.
Borden took a half-time lead of 21-17. Borden let that margin slip away to a tie at 41 all in regulation.
In the overtime Borden hit seven of eight free throws to outscore SC by five points. The final was Borden 52-47.
Dalton Wagoner led the scoring for Borden with 13, Brandon Beam with 12 and Travis Scott stepped up with 11. Pease lead the scoring for SC with 17.
Borden returned home to play Crothersville Saturday, December 12th for Homecoming.
Both teams came out rather stiff and were having difficulties managing the flow of the game. Crothersville managed to close off the center of the court on defense keeping Borden from pushing the ball down the lane. Borden managed to push Crothersville out in the court and keeping them from taking advantage of their size inside. Borden did manage a one-point lead at the end of the quarter 7-6.
The second quarter did see the pace of the game pick up. Though Borden led most of the quarter, it was by never more than four points. By half time Crothersville’s Corey Lewis, 6’ 5” had picked up four fouls, he was not seen in the second half. Crothersville did pick up over 10 fouls in the first half. By half time the game was tied at 22-all.
The third quarter was similar to the second quarter. Neither team could manage to take control of the game. Ball handling and unforced errors kept both teams from being able to pull away. Borden came out and seemed to gain some momentum early but Crothersville fought back to only trail by two at the end of the third quarter. There was a growing problem for Crothersville through the third quarter as the fouls continued to build up.
Crothersville kept the game to no more than a four point margin through the fourth quarter until the last three and a half minutes. At that point Matthew Lucus, 6’ 4”, fouled out. Borden had improved on driving the middle through the fourth quarter. The drives generated more free throws then field goals and rolled up the fouls for Crothersville.
In the later part of the fourth quarter Crothersville pressed their defense hard trying to catch up. This along with their loss of size inside put Borden on the line 16 times as they converted for 13 points. This was the deciding factor as Borden came away with the win. Borden 57 – Crothersville 47
Borden’s scoring was led by Dalton Wagoner with 22 points, 14 coming from the free throw line. He was followed by Jacob Rich with 15 and Brandon Beam with 11.
Crothersville’s leading scorers were Anthony Martin and Cameron Royalty with 10 each.
Borden’s next game will be Friday, December 18th in the Washington County Holiday Tournament against West Washington.
