On the return debut of Indiana hall of fame coach Donna Cheatham at Scottsburg, the atmosphere in Meyer Gym was electric. The all time winningness coach in IHSSA girls’ basketball history returned to the place where she won the 1989 state championship. Her new Warriorettes team took on the visiting Jennings County Lady Panthers and added to Cheatham’s wins with a 59-30 blowout on Friday, November 13..
The game started off great for the Warriorettes as Symantha Norton scored on the very first possession, giving them a quick 2-0 lead and adding more excitement to the already eccentric crowd. Scottsburg then picked it up on the other end of the court playing pressure defense and holding the Lady Panthers to only four points in the quarter. However, after a three pointer and a quick steal by Courtney Means, the Warriorettes began to cool off. Then Scottsburg went on a 6-1 run late to extend their lead to 11-4 at the end of the quarter.
The second got off to a slow start as both teams struggled to score. Sloppy play and several turnovers plagued both teams from this point on. Scottsburg then got some baskets to drop and they took a nine point lead 16-5, but Jennings County countered with a run of their own to get back into the game. However, the Warriorettes managed to take advantage of the Lady Panthers miscues and extend their halftime lead to 12 points.
The second half looked much like the second period. Scottsburg gave up several possessions in a row to turnovers, but with good defense, held Jennings County to only a free throw in four minutes of play. The Warriorettes, after a few big baskets, looked to be in control of the game. However, the Lady Panthers began to find their stroke and scored eight points in the final two minutes of the period to close the gap to 37-23.
In the final quarter of play the Warriorettes lost a key starter. Senior Courtney Means went down with an ankle injury thirty seconds into the game and did not return. Despite this, Scottsburg went on to roll to a 59-30 victory and give coach Donna Cheatham her 380th career win at Scottsburg.
Scoring in double digits for the Warriorettes were Norton and Katie Burch with 14 and Darion Hutchinson with 10. Norton also lead the team with 14 rebounds. The Lady Panthers were led in scoring by Magner with 9. The JV also won the game by a score of 41-21.
